American Dominance of the Dairy Industry

The dairy cattle population in the US is just over 9.2 million head of cows. Holstiens account for some 85% of the total dairy cowherd at around 7.8 million. The next most populist breed would be the Jersey breed accounting for approximately 7% of the total number of dairy cows.

For many years the US production industry has participated in production records programs. Today, 4.28 million cows in the US are utilizing the Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) system and nearly all the remaining cows are participating in some form of on farm records program. 90% of all Holstein in the US utilize the DHI program. Smailler programs contribute into the overall collection of data with the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) providing a critical central point in nearly all the systems.
